Just a few days after the funeral of 15-year old Hadiya Pendleton in Chicago, two young gang members have been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. One of the shooters, Michael Ward, is just 18 years old, and the other, Kenneth Williams, is just 20. Sadly, both have thrown their lives away over what turned out to be a mistaken identity. They have admitted that they shot and killed the wrong person, in a retaliation attempt stemming from another murder.
Nathaniel Pendleton, father of Hadiya Pendleton, commented, "I’m ecstatic that they found the two guys. I’m thanking God that these two guys are off the streets, so that this doesn’t happen to another innocent person." He says its the first time he's smiled since his daughter died.
Hadiya was killed in January 2013 in the Harsh Park area of Chicago, only just a mile from President Barack Obama’s Kenwood home. Her case was one of more than 530 homicides in the city in the last 14 months.
