Study Says Abortion Rate at Lowest Level Since 1973
Remember this controversial billboard from a few years ago? The group behind it, ThatsAbortion.com, was making an attempt to inform the public that more African American children die as a result of abortion than for any other reason.
Well, it appears that those devastating statistics are going down. According to a new data analysis, the abortion rate in the USA has dropped to its lowest level since the procedure became legal in 1973. To be exact, there has been a 13% decline in both the abortion rate and the number of abortions from the years 2008 to 2011.
Guttmacher Institute in New York City, the organization who conducted the research, found that major declines were seen in all but six states - Alaska, Maryland, Montana, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Wyoming - which all saw either no change or an increase in abortion rates.
Rachel Jones, lead author of the study by Guttmacher, says she attributes the decline to more women using "highly effective contraceptive methods such as the IUD" and the fact that the study period was during the recession and sluggish recovery.
